So I thought I'd try my hand at photographing lightening a couple of days ago when there was an impressive storm. It was an interesting experience, and I got soaked soon after taking this; but I believe I got a good outcome.

EDIT: Despite the opinions of some people; the only photoshopped part of this image is the watermark. To take these images; I used a long exposure to capture several strikes into one image.
I was perfectly safe at the time, My telephoto lens allowed me to capture the image from a safe distance.
Also; the colour of the strike is due to the evaporated eucalyptus oil in the air released by the hectares and hectares of gum trees both on that ridge and beyond. It's called Australia people.
Also... about the rule 'lightning never strikes the same place twice'. This is false. You only have to look at the lightning strike statistics of buildings such as the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty to understand this.

That looks a little close, actually it looks very close..I photograph Lightning and I am a storm chaser as well and I've never seen lightning like this. It's just very odd that it would be so bright going through the cloud like that as well as coming down from the cloud. With a strick like this you should be able to see it go across the sky as it doesn't strike though clouds like that, it expands out, as the clouds act as conductor with the thousand of particals. I am also surprised that the ridge did not set on fire. That's a very close strike and you could of gotten yourself killed being that close. Lightning is nothing to mess around with and I wouldn't suggest being so nonalant about it. It's jut not something you walk outside and do. Seeing how you were obviously in the core, especially with a strike that close you should of gotten soaked. Lightnings too close not to be in the core. I really suggest you know what you're doing. I'm not trying to downtalk you or anything, but you really need to be careful.

Seeing as you BLOCKED ScottieDoctor, let me just tell you some things they want to tell you. They were going to tell you politely, but obviously you don't want to hear it that way. I am now handing over the computer.

Hi.
1. The picture is taken from a distance of AT LEAST two and a half kilometers. That's about 2 miles, if that's the way you measure things.
2. Lightning doesn't strike through clouds? Where do you think it originates from? Single strikes like that are VERY common.
3. There is a thing called a VALLEY on the other side of that ridge. In that valley; there is a LAKE. Guess what? Lightning just LOVES lakes. It was this lake that it was hitting; not the ridge.
4. I was standing under a verandah. Safe. Wow. No; I just want to be killed by lightening.
